Canvas in Code

Canvas lives in Figma and in two codebases: Canvas Kit, Workday’s React library, and Xpresso, Workday’s own platform code. Designers don’t write that code, so we work closely with the Canvas Kit engineers to keep the Figma library matched to Canvas Kit, component for component.

For Xpresso, our designers in Dublin, Ireland keep a Platform Figma library where every component has an Xpresso code equivalent. It’s built on Canvas tokens, assets, and components, so a change in Canvas flows straight down to Platform. The harder part is that different teams own different composed components in Platform, so staying in step takes more coordination. Canvas is used by 80+ teams.
